2007 Non-Resident Archery Deer Application Results

Congratulations! Everyone who applied for the end of June lottery will receive their permits in late August.

There are approximately 1,450 remaining combination (one either sex and one antlerless only) archery deer permits that will be sold on a first come, first serve basis beginning August 6th at 8:00 CST to those that did not previously apply. You can purchase your permit via the internet. DNR Direct Online License Sales or by phone at 1-888-6PERMIT (1-888-673-7648)

Non-residents are allowed one combination archery permit per season. Antlerless only permits for $15.50 will be available throughout the season over the counter at local license agents, by phone or by internet. If ordering by phone or internet, your permit will be mailed to you.

First Turkey Season

Our very good friend and long time client Doug Verhoeven did not waste any time in the first turkey season. Doug has deer hunted with us for several years and decided to try his luck turkey hunting. TTO was lucky enough to have youth hunters in camp for the youth turkey season this year! Despite unseasonably cold temperatures, Grant Snow started things off right by bagging a 25lbs Tom that sported a 10 1/2in beard along with 1 1/8in spurs. Congratualations Grant on a great bird! 2007 Shed Hunt

Generally shed hunting is a little tough here in Illinois due to our vast array of food sources spreading out our late season deer patterns. This year TTO staff found several sheds with some matched sets scoring in the 150+" to 160+" range. A wide range of antlers were found and improved age class is being noticed on many of our farms thanks to our management practices.

Joe and Mikey's September Bowhunt

Joe and Mike went to North Dakota to try their luck at some September Whitetails. Both were able to harvest nice bucks by bow on video. Photos are available in the photo gallery under 2006 Deer Harvest. In addition Mikey was able to shoot a cinnamon bear in Manitoba on video.

Our intent is to show our hunters that your TTO guides are diehard bowhunters themselves. We love a new challenge and jump at the chance to go hunting.

These hunts will be available on our upcoming DVD.

Other guides are on hunts of their own. Jeff is in Colorado chasing Elk and Bear and we look forward to his tales. Mike Czora and Joe Bannen just returned from a Caribou Hunt and both shot great bulls. They hunted with John Engleken and Adventure VGN. John will be in Tall Tine camp with his tracking dogs this fall.

Illinois Bucks

The information everyone wants. We are seeing several shooter bucks on our farms. We look forward to harvesting several of these monarchs. Nearly all bucks have shed their velvet and they will become harder to see over the next few weeks. The farmers are just starting to harvest the corn and we look forward to being able to watch those cut cornfields.

Field Reports

TTO staff is beginning to notice more and more rubs and scrapes showing up throughout the timber as mature and younger bucks alike are beginning to shed their velvet. Scrape activity is always good when setting trail cameras, because a large percentage of pictures of mature deer are taken on scrapes during night time hours. Keep an eye on the scouting photos for updates.

Deer sightings have been somewhat down due to the presence of mature corn and soybeans. This is normal for this time of year. Several farmers were beginning to harvest crops until recent rains have delayed progress. Several big bucks are still being seen. A bachelor group of three hard horned whitetails were spotted yesterday it consisted of a 130 class 8pt, a mid 140 class 8pt and a 170 class 10pt.

Hopefully the rain will subside and let TTO staff get back to fall plantings and tree stands. We cannot wait for October 1 and look forward to chasing mature whitetails with all of you!

Things at TTO are really looking promising for the 2006 hunting season. TTO staff has been hard at work scouting, hanging treestands, working on the lodge, planting fall food plots, as well as food plot maintenance and spraying. Many trophy class animals are being seen, but visibility is getting tougher by the day as crops mature and make many fields impossible for spotting animals. Trail monitoring cameras are in the timber and should help us to update the 2006 Scouting Photos soon. Stay tuned!

New Lodge

The new lodge is being renovated. TTO staff has been hard at work updating and tying up a lot of loose ends with TTO's new home. The place is looking great and will provide a much more spacious and relaxed camp atmosphere. The new country setting will provide hunters with the relaxing getaway they have only dreamed about!

Updates

Spring food plot planting finished up with soybean plots being completed this week. Soybeans were planted last in hopes of having "green" bean plots to hunt in October due to their deer drawing capabilities early in the season. As the latter parts of the season occur the beans will mature and turn brown. They will be left standing as an excellent cold weather and late season food source. Fall plantings of Buck Forage Oats, Rye, and turnips will start being planted in August. Meanwhile, food plot maintenance, long distance scouting, and stand placement are on the agenda for TTO. Many big bucks are being seen regularly on and around TTO leases. Several upper end bucks have been located and show huge potential with over a month left for antler growth and development. Hopefully TTO staff will remember to bring a video camera so we can post some of the giant deer they have been seeing to the website. Stay tuned to the scouting photo gallery for updates!

Great News!

TTO is excited to announce three new team members. John Engelken as well as his dogs Giselle and Jesse will be working with TTO this fall. John, Giselle, and Jesse are among the premier blood trackers in the nation. We at TTO feel it is our responsibility, to the whitetail deer that we love and pursue, to exhaust every possible resource to recover all wounded game. After watching John and his dogs last year we realize their capabilities far exceed those of any human's alone and are thrilled to have them on board for the 2006 hunting season! John and his dogs are an invaluable asset that will maximize our client's recovery rate and help us to be the best we can be.

Reports from the Field

Reports from the field have TTO Staff very enthused about the amount of mature deer sign being observed on all leases. Antler growth is beginning and numerous potential trophy class deer are being spotted. These deer are early in the developmental stages of antler growth so it is tough to tell score, but some frames with huge potential have been seen. A bachelor group of three bucks fit just that description. Two of the bucks looked to be 3years old and their mainbeams were already outside the ears and just beginning to curve. The third buck in the group was easily 2 inches outside the ears and looked to have a drop tine or a droopy beam on one side. Either way he looks like he is going to be truly giant for the 2006 season. Trail cameras and Wildlife Eye will soon be deployed!

Keeping Busy

TTO has been hard at work preparing food plot sites, planting food plots, and hanging tree stands. Thanks to above average rainfall this spring both crops and food plots are looking lush and continuing to grow well. Several of our crop-locked leases have been setup for the upcoming season. We are really looking forward to the fall hunting season and feel it is going to be one of our best yet!

Turkeys

We killed several great turkeys this year. Joe "Scuba Steve" Bannen came down for his first ever turkey hunt. Jeff and Mikey guided him to a great bird with an 11 3/4" beard. Randy Hansen was lucky enough to shoot a bearded hen with an 8" beard. We will be posting some turkey photos soon.

Shed Antlers

We found several nice sheds this spring, including one that scores 75" and a few match sets of 140" and 150" bucks. Be sure to come to camp to see the new addtions to our shed collection.

New for 2006

Of course we have done some restructuring to make camps more successful and things run smoother. We have also removed all of the stands from the timber and they are currently being repositioned. Nearly everything will be in a fresh set from years previous. We are getting more agressive with some stand sets and the repostioning should have a major impact on our success. Several new food plots have been planted and we are trying a variety of other plot forages this fall. We are looking forward to a great year and can't wit to see old friends and meet new ones this fall.

Self serve hunts will be more organized and more productive

Self serve hunts are conducted on trophy managed farms that lie farther from our main camp and function better when a hotel or campground is used for lodging. A guide will be available for property and stand site orientation as well as recovery services. The self serve hunts will include prescouting, treestand placement, hunting rights on trophy managed farms, and recovery services. Self serve hunters will be responsible for their own food and lodging (we can make the arrangements for you). Self serve hunters will also be able to move their own stands when necessary. Changes for 2006

We will be returning to smaller camp sizes this year. Full serve hunts will be limited to 12 hunters per week. Anyone else wishing to hunt will be able to hunt the self serve camps (see other news item "Self Serve"). We want to provide our clients with the best possible opportunity to harvest a buck of a lifetime so we are reducing camp sizes. We will also be looking at options for a new lodging facility.

Bucks Without Antlers

Toward the end of the season we saw an abnormal number of bucks without antlers. Normally, shedding occurs in late Jan through March but we have seen several without antlers since Christmas. We believe it was due to the stress of the drought this late summer/fall.

Season So Far

We have struggled through tough weather conditions but when the weather cooperates we have success. On Sun we finally had some West and NW winds. 6 shots were taken at trophy bucks. Mon turned out warm and south winds again and shooter sightings dropped dramatically. Several good bucks have been taken and we have lost 2 absolute giants so far. Several upper end bucks have also been missed.

We were unable to continue on a blood trail for Dave's buck while he was here. A week later we found what was left of his buck and it is a dandy. 182" gross. Congrats Dave.

Buck Sightings

We are seeing several upper end bucks and several Non-Typical bucks have been seen. There is an increase in the number of rubs and scrapes so far this year when compared to previous years. We are expecting an early rut this year. Farmers have started harvesting crops-which is early. All of our crops should be removed by the 2nd week of Oct.

The crops in IL are horrible this year. We are classified as a disaster area due to a severe drought. The good news is that the weather hasn't seemed to effect antler quality. We are seeing some really good bucks and everything seems to be normal. The other good news is that crops should come out early this year due to the drought. Bad news is that a lot of out clover plots were burnt up in the drought. We will be busy the next month replanting.

Bear Hunt 2005

My father and I traveled to Manitoba to bear hunt this spring with Tom Walunas at Duck Mountain Outfitters. (204) 525-4405. www.duckmountainoutfitters.com. Tom runs a great camp and he and the guides work their butts off for you. We were very impressed. We will be returning soon. Both of us killed bears, with mine being of P&Y qulaity and saw lots of bears. The weather turned sour during our hunt and we had 5 days of rain, cold, and wind. Nevertheless, Tom and the guides continued to work hard for us and get us into unhunted areas and fresh baits. As a guide and outfitter, I know how important a quality operation can be to your success. I highly recommend DMO. Call Tom if you are looking for a quality bear hunt. The Legend of Tiny Lives On

For those of you who follow our history you will be glad to know that the now legendary Tiny has survived another season. We got a trail photo of him the first week of Feb 2005. This deer garners legendary status for his abilility to give us the slip at the last possible moment. As a 3 yr old he was a mid 160's 10-pt and we shot him in the shoulder with a bow. As a 4 yr old he was in the mid 180's as a 10-pt with a drop on his right side. We had several close encounters with him including a miss with a muzzleloader. This past year he was a 190 class 10-pt with an 11" droptine and was 5 yrs old. Several other close encounters with him left him to live another year. The good news he is the dominant breeder on this particular farm and we have several minutes of video footage of him. He will also be a 6 yr old next year and I believe he will grow his best rack ever. Can't wait to add another chapter to his life-hopefully the final one. Look at our scouting photos to see his Feb pic. It is not the greatest pic but it will have to do until the next one.

Season Totals

We had a good year this year with 26 bucks and 35 does taken. 15 Bucks were taken by bow with an average score of 146". The largest was a 202" 20-pt taken by Michael Smith of Loggy Bayou treestands. 11 bucks were taken by gun with the largest scoring 184" taken by Nick Vanstaveren from MI. Average gun harvest was 145". Next year promises ot be even better. Several shooters made it through and have been seen since season close. Several other borderline bucks will develop into next year's shooter class.

November Bowhunting Action Heating Up

TTO hunters killed three bucks in 2 days this past week as a break in the wet weather got the big ones moving. One of them is a 202" monster. The other 2 were fine 3 year olds: 153" and 147". Check out our 2004 bucks in the photo gallery for pictures.

Overall, most hunters are seeing good deer right now. The rut is definitely in swing, but things have yet to really blow open.

More Bucks Sighted

Hans came down over the weekend and we went over one of the new leases. Saw a tremendous amount of feeding sign in one bean field and he set up to watch it Sat evening. He got pictures of a 160+" buck. We will post them on the site when he emails them to us.

Giant Illinois Bucks

Showing Hans some of our farms over the weekend turned up some nice bucks. Saw a 155 or so on one of our old farms and saw 2 150 plus bucks right next to one of our new leases. I can honestly say that it has been a long time since I have seen this many shooters during the summer. Most of what we are seeing are 150" or better.

More Big Bucks Spotted

Sunday night saw a real monster in the beans. Framed just like Ricks 186 buck form a few years ago. He would definitely score in the 160-170 range now and has 10" G-2's already. He still has 5 weeks or so of growing to do and they can grow an inch per day. It is realistic to say he could go 190+ as a typical. Wouldn't he look good on your wall?

Food Plots

Our food plots are looking great and we just set some scouting cameras on some large tracks frequenting those fields. Hopefully get some photos. Food plots are clover, alfalfa, corn, beans, Biologic, turnips, and some others. We will be planting some cereal grains (wheat, rye, oats) in August.

Big Bucks

Jeff and Bob saw some nice deer this past week. Bob saw one in the 140's and Jeff video-taped a 150" buck and 130" buck at 9:30 in the morning feeding on beans. I saw another 150" buck on Wed nite but it was too dark to film.

We have recently combined Tall Tine Outfitters with Global Hunting Adventures Illinois Camp. This does not change our scope of things just adds more acreage and a quality guide, Hans Keller. Hans is known for successful hunts and we look forward to working with him in the future. Hans and Joe will be at the Jay's Sporitng Goods seminar on July 3, 2004

8 Shooters Spotted Friday on TTO Leases!

The other night we saw a 8 shooters while glassing a few of our leases Friday night. Most look to be around the 150" class, but one was HUGE! The landowner for this lease has a shed from a buck on this farm. The shed went through a tractor tire of his. It measures about 75"...meaning the buck was likely in the 160's last fall and will be even larger this fall! Watch our site as the summer continues for more information!
